A Kenya Honeymoon by Road: 10-Day Itinerary for Couples

💕

Most honeymoon lists send you to Bali or the Maldives. Kenya doesn't usually make those lists — and that's exactly why it's perfect. You get safari, beach, mountain views, world-class food, and you're rarely sharing your experience with 200 other honeymooners. Here's a 10-day road-trip itinerary built specifically for couples.

The shape of the trip

Three "chapters", each distinct enough to feel like a different holiday: Lake Naivasha for soft-landing romance after a long flight, Maasai Mara for the bucket-list safari moments, and Diani Beach for the slow-paced beach finale. You drive between Naivasha and Mara, then fly Mara → Diani to skip the long road south.

Total cost (mid-luxury, two people sharing): $3,800 – $5,500 all-in including car rental, lodges, fuel, park fees, the one internal flight, food and a small budget for gifts. That's roughly half what the same level of trip costs in Tanzania or Botswana.

Days 1-2: Nairobi (rest day)

Land at JKIA, take an airport transfer to a boutique hotel (we love Hemingways Nairobi in Karen — colonial-luxe, gardens, no road noise — or the more design-forward Tribe Hotel in Gigiri). Don't try to do anything ambitious on day 1. Get a couples massage. Sleep.

Day 2: Pick up the rental car (we deliver to your hotel). Spend the morning at the Giraffe Centre and a long lunch at Talisman in Karen. Catch the early-evening Karen sunset on the terrace.

Days 3-4: Lake Naivasha (200 km from Nairobi · 3 hours)

The drive down the Great Rift Valley is one of the most beautiful 30 minutes you'll ever spend in a car — there's a viewpoint near Mai Mahiu where most photos of "the Rift Valley" are taken. Stop.

Stay at Loldia House (game-lodge feel on the lake shore — antiques, fireplaces, total privacy) or the more affordable Lake Naivasha Country Club. Both have boat trips to Crescent Island, where you can walk among zebra, giraffe and impala on foot — no fences, no predators. It's surreal and very romantic at golden hour.

Pro tip: book a private picnic on the lake. Most lodges arrange this for around $80 — a boat, a chef, a checkered blanket on a remote island. Couples honeymoon-grade stuff.

Days 5-7: Maasai Mara (270 km from Naivasha · 5-6 hours on dirt)

This is the chapter you booked the trip for. The drive into the Mara is rough — you need a 4×4. Once you're inside the conservancies, the road conditions stop mattering.

Where to stay (couples edition): Skip the big "tented camps" with 30 tents — they feel like cruise ships. Pick a small conservancy lodge with 6-12 tents max. Mid-range gold-standard: Mara Bushtops or Sala's Camp. Splurge: Angama Mara or Mara Plains Camp (Out of Africa cinematic).

Two-night minimum, three nights ideal. Two game drives a day, plus a hot-air balloon morning on day 7 (book in advance — $475 each, includes champagne breakfast in the bush).

Days 8-10: Diani Beach (fly from Mara)

Drop the car back in Nairobi the morning of day 8 (we collect from your Mara lodge if you arrange it in advance, but easier to drive back the day before and fly out fresh). Fly Wilson Airport → Ukunda. 90 minutes.

Diani is white sand, zero waves at low tide, palm trees, dhows. Almanara Resort (private villa with butler) is the romantic-luxe pick. The Maji Beach Boutique Hotel is more accessible and equally lovely. Both organise sunset dhow cruises (private bookings around $200).

Don't try to do too much. The beach is the activity. One day for the sandbar trip to Wasini Island for fresh seafood. Otherwise: sleep in, swim, read, eat, repeat.

What we'd skip on a honeymoon

  • Mombasa city — interesting but chaotic; not a honeymoon vibe
  • Amboseli — incredible elephants but you've already had safari
  • Nairobi nightlife — fun but exhausting after a long flight

Practical notes

Kenya is more honeymoon-friendly than people expect. Most lodges throw in champagne and a flower-petal turn-down without you asking — just mention it's your honeymoon when booking. Many do free upgrades to the best room when capacity allows.

Vaccinations: yellow fever required if coming from a yellow-fever country (most travellers don't need it). Malaria pills recommended for Mara and coast. Get the prescription a week before travel.

Bottom line

10 days, three chapters, no two days alike. You'll come home with photos that don't look like everyone else's honeymoon photos. That's the point.
